Living on Mount Tamalpais

Muir Woods Park on Mount Tamalpais

Homes in Muir Woods Park neighborhood of Mill Valley provides exceptional access to open space, state and national parks, and a rural setting. A few hundred homes at 800 to 1,000 feet above downtown Mill Valley are often set in redwood groves and many have spectacular views of Mount Tamalpias, San Francisco, the San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.

Muir Woods Park homes, most built from 1900 through 1970, are arrayed along 1.7 miles of Panoramic Highway. The “highway” runs along a level ridge to the south of the mountain peaks. A few homes face the main road but most are on short side streets one the east and west sides.

This neighborhood is not for everyone, but is paradise for the dedicated residents who value being close to many miles of walking trails, beautiful forests, views, and serenity.

Living in Nature on Mount Tamalpais

The mountain, rising to about 2,600 feet, is a highlight of Marin County. Most of the mountain is preserved as open space, divided among these parks, all accessible from Muir Woods Park:

  • Mount Tamalpais State Park comprising about 25,000 acres.
  • Muir Woods National Monument, comprising about 554 acres.
  • Golden Gate National Recreation Area, comprising 82,000 acres, of which a quarter includes Mount Tamalpais.
  • Marin Municipal Water District Watershed comprising about 21,635 acres.

From the Lytton Square in the center of Mill Valley, the drive to Muir Woods Park takes 12-15 minutes (3-4 miles). There are no services or stores in the area, so residents shop in downtown Mill Valley. The nearest groceries are at Whole Foods (3-4 miles) or Safeway (4-5 miles).

At the north end of Muir Woods Park, Panoramic Highway drops through dedicated parklands for 17 miles (22 minute drive) to Stinson Beach and the Pacific Ocean.
