Christmas Tree Hill
Location
Beautiful, rural, with Bay views, and close to everything: Highway 101 and San Francisco, Menke Park, Corte Madera Town Park, Downtown Larkspur, shopping centers, and central to all of Marin County. The hill is populated with Victorian cottages and homes built through the 1960’s – many now rebuilt or remodeled. The original developer of this land built stairs – still in use – for the convenience of residents going to the Corte Madera Train Station (now Menke Park).

History of the Hill
In 1895, developer Emma Catharine Pixley and her sons formed the “Merry Colonists Tract” on Christmas Tree Hill. Using horse and cow paths and stairs, they divided the Hill into 2,500-sq-ft tent cabin lots, offering them for sale for as little as $50 each, and she paid for roads and water supply. Vacationers from San Francisco would take a ferry to Sausalito, then a train to the base of the Hill in Menke Park, where they disembarked and walked up to their camping spots.*
